A popular vegetarian restaurant serving non-greasy north Indian fare in Jayanagar.
Decor
It's called 1947 and has an Indian independence theme. Portraits of freedom fighters adorn the walls and evoke patriotic memories. The furniture has seen better days, but the big glass windows offer a great view of south Bangalore.

Food
The food is predictably north Indian, but not oily and that is a pleasant surprise. You'll find the ubiquitous paneer variations among the starters. Our steward suggested a Moong Phalli Paneer Seekh, which was quite good, the crunchy peanut bits adding to the texture. Rajasthani Bhindis were crisp fritters served with sliced onions and a minted green chatni. The Thandai version of Badam Milk was a refreshing accompaniment, though it could have done with the addition of black pepper. We ordered a basket of assorted rotis with a Dal Methi Lasooni, Pindi Chole and an unusual Phalon Ka Sangam made with fruits in a cashewnut gravy.

The menu also has a Chinese section, but somehow the thought of ordering from it was discordant, especially with the portraits staring down at us. But then the restaurant has to be practical and cater to everybody. One of the staff vends Maghai Paans on cash payment of `10 only.
Plus and minus
We were very impressed with the clockwork-like service flow and our orders were delivered in quick time. Non-greasy food is always welcome and we wish more restaurants would follow suit. The Pindi Chana was not soft and lacked the sourness of anardana.
